Dance it out and live your dreams
“Considering our circumstances, this was the apparent choice as you don’t need money for dance,” says Ravi.Today, he has come a long way, from the streets in Bareilly to Delhi to studying in the Broadway Dance Center, New York, Ravi is full of optimism and describes his journey as quite valuable.
“I realised that even if it meant sacrificing one meal a day to save up to join reputed dance institutes, I would have to invest in dance. I knew I had to excel in different dance forms to offer variety to my students,” he says, referring to his stints as a student in the Danceworx Performing Arts Academy and Salsa India Dance Academy, where he later joined as an instructor. Ravi’s passion led him to pick up Jazz, Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, Bachata and Hip Hop.
He also teaches underprivileged students at Rotary School, Sainik Farms where more than 30 children tap their feet to the beats and bounce around the school.
Rishabh, a student from the NGO, “Maza aata hai seekhney me..hum khoob naachtey hai”.
Ravi says, “My brother pursued dance with unbeatable fervour and trained children…I am happy following in his footsteps.”
Ravi is now the Founder-Director of Moving Souls, a Dance Academy in a posh south Delhi locality where he teaches several dance forms. He began teaching from his small flat and today he has three studios in the city.
“My only wish is to make every student at moving souls, a good and honest person through the medium of dance.”
Talking about the name of his institute Ravi says that it didn’t take him much time to decide on the name. “For me dancing is instrument to express ones belief and expression through movement that’s why I named it- Moving Souls”.
Going strength to strength
Recently, the US-based Island Touch Dance Academy announced an association with the Moving Souls Dance Academy to teach Bachata (a Latin dance form) in India. It authorizes Ravi to hold exclusive rights to teach their dance choreographies.
The Island Touch founders, Ataca said, “We are happy to be working with Ravi Rastogi. Ravi has shown a high-level understanding of the Bachata dance form and will help bring the dance community in India into the Island Touch family. We are looking forward to ‘touching’ India through our form of Bachata.”
Ravi Rastogi said, “I am glad to partner with Island Touch. The association opens up opportunities for students to explore their desires and capacities through Bachata. Today, Bachata is gaining popularity beyond the borders of Dominican Republic and the United States. I hope this will serve as a great opportunity to those who are keen to learn this dance style.”
For the famous singer Raftaar, Ravi is warm person who recognizes your dancing skills immediately.
“The first time I saw Ravi was in the studio teaching and the first thing to catch my attention was his mixing up with the fellow students which forms a feel of ‘family in the class’ and he acts as a ‘family outside the class’ as well. This whole thing comes naturally to him as he’s a very down to earth personality, but as they say looks can be deceiving. Ravi is a master in his style both as a performer and a teacher. He was the first one to show us authentic Latin style on an old school Bollywood song. If Ravi can’t make you do it, no one can make you do it,” Raftaar said.
Ravi is not only training his students to dance at a professional level, but is also teaching them to be the best versions of themselves. He says, “I want the audience to feel that they have seen excellent quality dance, something that reaches their heart, mind and soul. Basically, it’s a journey of your heart.”
